YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

We are the people we've been waiting for, and it's going to take all of us

There's no end to the ways you can get involved. Get creative! Talk about our changing climate and the amazing things people are doing to safeguard our future. Link up with people in your community who are already taking action. I believe that local grassroots organizations are far more effective than national, conventionally run NGOs, but we're all on the same team. Start where you're comfortable. Just be sure to research what it is you're supporting, as sometimes large 501(c)(3) organizations make compromises that you would likely disagree with.

On our Friends page, find links to plug in with the people you saw in the film.

Here’s a great 3-part piece from Julia Steinberger that outlines the basics of individual and collective action on climate: An Audacious Toolkit: Actions Against Climate Breakdown

Sharing resources is always a great way to help, especially when you have resources but not time or capacity. You can donate money, offer space for folks to gather and organize, contribute food or materials for campaigns, etc.

Some of these groups have more of an "environmentalist" bent; I know that's a dirty word for some folks. Some are socialist, too. Fear not. If these groups or their campaigns don't align with what you're looking for, their members and organizers ought to be able to point you in the right direction. Don’t forget that because climate change is affecting every aspect of our lives, you don’t need to be working within a climate-centered framework to be contributing to the project of building a livable future. Maybe women’s rights, housing justice, or prison-industrial complex abolition is your primary area of advocacy or interest: ask yourself and the people in your circle how the issues relate to climate and how you could incorporate climate initiatives into your mission. I have my own opinions about which of the above groups are more effective than others, but that’s not really the point! There’s room for everyone in this movement, and we aren’t all going to share the same perspective.

Community action is the way to go for sure, but it helps to do things on our own as well! There are countless resources for individual action at this point, from reducing personal energy use to growing our own food. Check out that Audacious Toolkit linked above. If you don’t know where to start, send me an email and I’ll share some resources based on what interests you.

Be sure to contact your representatives and senators to demand just, equitable and binding climate policy. Once you’ve done that, hit up your local reps too! City council commissioners, mayors, county supervisors and so on.
